Rule 20: Melee

A. Melee Procedure.

1.

Addition

d. Infantry may not close to contact with the front of a formed cavalry unit. They may still receive a contact.

2. Divide melees.

Addition

Troop Type Melee Impetus Modifiers

Second round follow-up +1

6.

Addition

Disordered troops now divide this number by two.

B. Melee Factor Modifiers.

1. Impetus.

Addition

Impetus changes in the second and subsequent rounds of a melee. Chargers loose their impetus unless they are folllowing up a FCing or Routing unit. Units that follow up a FBing unit have a +1 modifier.

3. National Characteristics.

Addition

The bonus some troops get for attacking only applies if they are advancing towards the enemy (at least half a turn's movement allowance per turn) or they are the attacker in a melee. It does not apply if they are the defender in a melee unless they charged into or advanced into that melee. The bonus for defending, only applies if you stood to receive the charge.

5. Square.

Addition

A square is six ranks versus cavalry. A square is not disordered at the end of a melee with cavalry unless of course it lost and received a morale result which left it disordered. It must still spend a turn reforming before it can move. If infantry being attacked by cavalry are not in square, the cavalry are automatically on the units flank. The infantry unit suffers all effects of this.

Cavalry have a +2 morale modifier to close to contact with a square. Although cavalry check for close to contact with a modified morale (+2), they suffer the effects of the unmodified morale. ie. A cavalry unit with a morale of 6 will check for close to contact on the 8 column (other factors may change this). If it fails to close to contact, it will suffer the morale effects of the 6 column.

The plus 2 (+2) modifier is the horse factor. It represents the fact that horses will not willingly jump into a mass of bayonets. It does not represent the unwillingness of the men to close with the square. That is why the unit does not suffer the morale effects of the modified +2 morale.

C. Breakthrough.

Addition

The attacker is not disordered after a breakthrough.

Addition

D. Lines.

A line that is hit on the end only has the end counter and the one next to it disordered after the melee.

E. Gunners.

Addition

Note, if the guns are being crewed partly by gunners and partly by infantry you may have to do several different melees.

Addition

G. Flank.

A unit can be contacted in the front (full front of the unit to 90 degrees to the flank), Flank ( fully on the flank as per WRG 7 rules ) or rear (past 90 degrees off of full flank).

1. Front. A unit contacted in the front has no morale modifiers applied against it (excepting for cavalry) unless it is also contacted on the flank or rear. The attacking unit will be placed in contact with the front of the defending unit.

2. Full Flank. A unit contacted in full flank (not charged) receives the Morale modifier for being contacted in flank but is not disordered. A unit charged on full flank is disordered as well as receiving a +2 morale modifier. You get a -2 modifier for contacting or charging a unit in full flank. If a unit in column of divisions is charged in flank, only the column that is contacted is disordered. The other column that was not contacted is still ordered. They both still suffer the morale effects of being disordered.

3. Rear. A unit contacted in the rear (not charged) has a +2 morale modifier. It has no ranks to the rear. A unit charged in the rear is disordered and gets a +2 morale modifier as well. You get a -2 morale modifier for contacting or charging an enemy unit in the rear.

In the case of full flank or rear being contacted (not charged) it is assumed that the defending troops have enough time to turn and face the enemy. When they are being charged, it is assumed that they do not have enough time to turn and face the enemy and thus the unit ends up disordered.

H. Continuing Melees (Original Rule).

After . . . melee will continue until a result requiring movement is reached or one side breaks off. Each unit may expand the melee during these additional rounds. To . . . in flank. Both sides are allowed to expand equally. If due to different counter lengths, an enemy counter would be unengaged and able to hit the defender in flank, the defending expanding counter may engage that enemy counter instead of joining the front line. The die rolls, rolled for the first round of the melee are used in all subsequent rounds. Impetus modifers change. See B.1 and B.4 above.

I. Breaking Melee:

Expansion

2.Cavalry . . . casualties; a cavalry unit breaks off of a melee with infantry or artillery for free. It may then move away and do what it wishes. It . . . may not voluntarily break . . . .

Addition

4. . . . The rout uses up their first time morale check for fear of disaster.

5. If both units break from the melee due to morale results, there is no winner and there are no extra casualties to either unit.

6. The slash will not cause an extra morale check.

7. If a unit cannot Fall Back, the morale result is upgraded to a Forced Back result, with attendant casualty results.

Addition

J. Follow-Ups.

A unit may attempt to continue a melee with an enemy unit that has received a fall back or forced back result. It must be the unit it previously engaged. It follows-up the falling back unit at its normal movement rate for the formation it is in. The unit is formed up until the melee is finally finished or it can not maintain contact with the falling back unit. It is then disorganized until it spends a half turn's movement phase to reform. The falling back unit fights organized if it received a FB (fall back); it fights disorganized if it received a FC (forced back) result. The melee, if the attacker can maintain contact will move back at the appropriate FB or FC rate. The unit-following up does not have to contact a new unit, it may chose instead to stand in place. If while attempting to follow up a melee the retreating unit gets out of range, the following-up unit will move a normal turns move ahead and stop, disordered. British Cavalry may be required to follow up a melee. See rule 21:E pursuit checks.

Addition

K. Winner.

The winner of the melee receives a -1 morale bonus if it stands after its morale checks (note this can only boost this units morale to one level better than its' initial morale at the start of the battle {to a limit of a morale of 3}). The unit is disordered and takes one half turn to reform.
